The best duration of sexual intercourse is 7-13 minutes. Even a three-minute encounter is quite "adequate", according to a study by American experts.

An Australian sexologist, in his comments to the results of the study said, that most men prefer longer sex, while women prefer shorter encounters, The Australian reports.

This study was the first to measure the duration of an ideal sexual intercourse. The researchers carried out a survey in USA and Canada. Most respondents turned out to consider a 3-7 minute sexual intercourse to be "adequate", a shorter intercourse - "too short", while sex, that lasts more than 13 minutes was said to be "too long".

The study published in the international edition of The Journal of Sexual Medicine was carried out in order to dispel the common myth stating that good sex must last very long. American studies show that most Americans consider sexual intercourse to be normal if it lasts for 15-20 minutes. However various surveys show, that as a rule an intercourse takes half of this time.

The author of the study Dr Corty claims that such ideas are the reason for "disappointment and dissatisfaction". "In the fantasy model of male sexuality, men have large penises, rock-hard erections, and can sustain sexual activity all night long," Dr Corty says.

It turns out that many men and women share this fantasy.

The result of this study is creation of a realistic model of sexuality that must help those who suffer from various sexual disorders and disfunctions or even to prevent these disorders.
