Sex Toys to Teach Medical Students Anatomy

Lack of appropriate teaching material for medical students made Carla Pugh, assistant professor of surgery at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago do an unusual shopping. The doctor went to sex stores where she bought plenties of sex toys and realistic dolls with help of which she was going to teach students anatomy.

According to doctor Pugh, she was dissatisfied with quality of mannequins available for her students to practice on as these lacked anatomical accuracy. Doctor says one of mannequins had the anus located in the wrong place and in another one the prostate was in the wrong position, to say nothing of genitalia that was of the same size and shape in all mannequins.

In order to help future doctors learn anatomy doctor Pugh went to a few stores that sell sex toys and realistic dolls. In the shops doctor managed to find lots of realistic vaginas as well as penises of various shapes, circumcised and uncircumcised, erect and without erection.

Shop assistants laughed at the doctor as she asked to give her lots of vaginas , penises and dolls without explaining what she needed so many sex toys for.

"They would be really freaked if they knew I wanted the dolls to cut up," -Carla Pugh laughed.

Also Carla Pugh's collection of teaching material includes baby dolls for delivery models, jelly balls that imitate ovarian masses and wooden balls to represent ovarian cancers.

Carla Pugh has patented technology that allows students to learn how to examine the most intimate and sensitive body areas such as genitalia, breasts and rectums.. This technology combines portions of fully formed anatomical mannequins with computers. Each of the mannequins has paper-thin sensors inside to measure a student's touch and send individual readings to computer monitor.

According to doctor Pugh traditional medical training deprives students of practice as they have to go straight from textbooks to examination of live patients.

Dr Pugh realizes the fact that her simulators are not perfect, however they are close enough to the reality and allow the students to know whether their touch is too rough or two soft or whether they missed the key spot entirely.
